I help kids and teens learn how to cope with stress, big feelings, and the challenges of growing up.

Katie Sammann, LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist)

You’re a great parent who wants the best for your child. You’ve helped her through so many challenges and given her great opportunities so she can have a bright future. She’s been excelling in so many areas of her life. But you’re now noticing that she’s having some internal struggles that you aren’t able to fix. She’s stressed out, not enjoying things she used to love, being too hard on herself, and taking on worries that a kid her age shouldn’t have to think about. You’ve talked to her about your concerns, but she’s still struggling to deal with her emotions.

I love working with kids like yours to help her understand her feelings better and how to not be controlled by them. Therapy is a great way for teens and kids to address these emotional challenges. It helps give them a place to feel safe sharing their experience where they know they won't be judged. Therapy allows them to become more comfortable talking about their emotions, which leads to better relationships, better mental health, and a happier life.

Therapy is a process of lifting the weight of their worries, emotions, and fears so they can live their lives more fully.  It isn't just teaching them a few coping skills and sending them on their way.  It's supporting them each week, and holding space for what they have to say without judgement.  It's helping them build confidence in their ability to handle whatever life throws at them.  It's showing them a new way to look at things while still honoring their perspective.  And, additionally, it is teaching them some coping skills to help them manage particularly intense emotions.

It's possible your teen or child is scared of their emotions.  Perhaps they've gotten more intense lately and they don't feel in control.  A lot of people respond to this by trying to ignore their feelings, not talk about them, and try to shut it all out.  But this never makes their lives easier, happier, or more fulfilling.  In therapy, I help teens and kids become more comfortable talking about their feelings, and not see emotions as the enemy.  I can help your child or teen learn ways to cope with stress and big emotions and feel in control again.
